Our annual conferences are one of the most important events we celebrate and over the years it has continued to grow. They are held in New Zealand and one of the Pacific Islands on alternate years.

The annual conference provides a forum to discuss and debate key issues impacting on the health outcomes of Pacific people in New Zealand and the Pacific region. It also encourages the strengthening of relationships and partnerships among health professionals and stakeholders working throughout the health sector.

PMA 11th Annual conference 2008 Auckland

Conference theme: "Riding the Wave: Health in the Pacific Region."

The conference Objectives are to:

"Provide a forum for health professionals and stakeholders to discuss local and regional issues that influence the health outcomes of Pacific peoples in the region. The conference will provide an opportunity to disseminate evidence based knowledge through presentations and key note addresses and will also provide the opportunity to strengthen relationships and networks amongst participants and facilitate long term collaboration across services, regions and countries."

The 2008 conference will focus on the emerging issues in New Zealand and the wider Pacific region for health professionals, administrators and policy makers. As the capacity and capability of Pacific health services continue to improve there is a natural focus on improving health systems through reform, improving the quality of clinical practice and in sharing experiences, information and resources.

This year PMA is privileged to work with the University of Auckland School of Population Health to also offer a one day Research Symposium on "Obesity Prevention in Pacific Communities: Findings and Lessons from the Pacific OPIC studies" on Wednesday 22nd October.

The clinical theme in this year's conference is "Cancer - the journey from prevention to palliative care" and is designed to provide an opportunity for workers and families across the region to focus on the specific initiatives that have been developed to meet the challenges that cancer provides in our communities.
