Healthcare Heroes programme

Healthcare Heroes is another initiative placed in high schools to encourage high school students into health science. This will be carried out through strengthening their science abilities and navigation through NCEA into tertiary study.

The programme offers mentoring, academic counselling, career events, science strengthening and  meetings with parents. PMA are currently working with 21 high schools.

Eligibility

Each participant must meet the defined PMA criteria of eligibility. The management team and mentoring staff must be knowledgeable of and understand all eligibility criteria required for mentor participation in the programme.

  • Be of Pacific decent
  • Enrolled at a tertiary institution and studying towards a health qualification.
  • Reside in Auckland.
  • Agree to a one-year commitment to the programme
  • Agree to attend mentor trainings as required
  • Be willing to communicate with the mentee(s) weekly/fortnightly.
  • Be willing to adhere to mentoring policies and procedures
  • Commit to spending a minimum of 4 hours a month with the mentee(s)
  • Be willing to communicate regularly with the Programme Director and submit meeting and activity information.
  • Have a clean criminal history
  • Have never been accused, arrested, charged, or convicted of a violence related crime or any kind of paedaphilic acitivity
  • Not be a user of illicit drugs
  • Not use alcohol or controlled substances in an excessive or inappropriate manner
  • Not have falsified information during the course of the screening process
